Mary Free Bed’s Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports Department was proud, again this year, to host the Thunderfest Quad Rugby Tournament the second weekend of October. The tournament was held at MVP Fieldhouse in Grand Rapids Michigan. Teams in attendance were our Grand Rapids Thunder, the Great Lakes Clippers, Ohio Buckeye Blitz, Ohio Akron Rhinos, RIC Bears and the London Annihilators from Ontario. Supporting sponsors for the tournament were Fusion Medical, Amphenol Borisch Technologies, Awards Plus Engraving, Inc, Player donations, Great Lakes Physical Therapy, Michigan Personalized Home Care, Webb Chemical, Lakeshore Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, INC, Rykes Bakery, Tim Hortons, Sam’s Club. Lunches were partially donated by Jimmy Johns and Pizza Hut along with home team contributions. Many local volunteers were needed to make sure this tournament was a success and my student Emily Aulerich did a great job as volunteer coordinator. Our team of officials, under the leadership of head official Kristin Little were Bob Lopez, Joe Bongiovanni, Jordan Luxembourger, Kerin Banfield. They did an amazing job of training the table volunteers and calling the games.

Day one of competition ended with the Grand Rapids Thunder and the London Annihilators tied for first place with a record of 3-0. With only one loss the Great Lakes Clippers were hot on our heels with a record of 2-1. The RIC Bears were in fourth place with a 1-2 record and both Ohio teams in fifth and sixth.

On the second day of competition London pulled ahead winning a game against the Thunder. The Great Lakes Clippers were also on their game and beat the RIC Bears. With London’s victory against the Ohio Blitz they had secured first place in the tournament with a 5-0 record. The last game of the tournament was for second place. The Grand Rapids Thunder and the Great Lakes Clippers are both from Michigan so to have this be the deciding game for second place in the tournament was awesome! The score at the end of the first period was Grand Rapids Thunder 11 and Great Lakes Clippers 15, for the next two periods the teams swapped goals ending each within a point of each other but by the end of
the game the Great Lakes Clippers had pulled ahead securing the victory!

Final standings for the tournament were the London Annihilators taking first place, the Great Lakes Clippers taking second place and the Grand Rapids Thunder taking third place.

With the team standings in the books we handed out the individual awards for MVP and class. The award for tournament 3.5 went to Lars Mertens of the Grand Rapids Thunder, Tournament 3.0 went to Garrett Hickling of the London Anihilators, Tournament 2.5 went to Stephen Zuravel of the Akron Rhinos, Tournament 2.0 went to Eric Chase of the Great Lakes Clippers, Tournament 1.5 went to Dan Sauber of the RIC Bears, Tournament 1.0 Andy Zimmer of the Great Lakes Clippers, and the Tournament .5 went to Mat Milstead of the Grand Rapids Thunder. The MVP of the tournament was Dan Sauber of the RIC Bears! Congratulations to all the teams that participated in this tournament and to all the individual athletes that were voted as best in class and MVP!
