2012 Rotary Club of Perryville Crazy 8s Tournament
St. Louis Rugby Rams hosted their annual Crazy 8s Tournament on December 1st and 2nd, 2012 at the Perry Park Center in Perryville, Missouri. Six teams descended upon this small Missouri town, but while this town is small, the action was huge!
Lakeshore Demolition, Shepherd Smash, Tampa Generals, Texas Stampede & Tucson Pterodactyls all made the journey to compete in the St. Louis Rams’ annual Crazy 8s Tournament. The Crazy 8s tournament is named for and dedicated to Jason DeSalvo, a former Rams player who wore the number 8 and who passed away unexpectedly in October of 2006. This year the Rotary Club of Perryville became the title sponsor of the tournament.
With just six teams, a round robin tournament was played over two days. At the end of day one both Texas and St. Louis had won all three of their games. Texas beat out Lakeshore, Tucson and Shepherd while St. Louis beat out Shepherd, Lakeshore and Tampa. Tucson tallied two wins, one over Tampa and one over Shepherd. Lakeshore finished the day with one close win over Tampa.
Day two started off with two exciting games: Tucson vs St. Louis and Shepherd vs Tampa. Shepherd ended up taking the win over Tampa and St. Louis upset Tucson. In the second games of the day Texas won over Tampa and Lakeshore squeaked a win over Tucson by only 2 points.
The final games of the day would decide the tournament standings with the championship game between St. Louis and Texas. Third place standing was still undetermined because if Shepherd won over Lakeshore, a three-way tie for third place would have to be decided by predetermined procedures…and that is exactly what happened. Shepherd beat Lakeshore by an overwhelming 26 points. This point differential became crucial as it superseded the point differentials Tucson and Lakeshore had acquired during their wins, therefore securing the 3rd place trophy for Shepherd.
The championship game proved to be a battle for both teams. Texas lead by 2 at the end of the first quarter but the Rams never let down their fight. While St. Louis came back to tie up the game several times, the Stampede managed to end each remaining quarter 3 points ahead. In the end, the Stampede won and took home the 1st place trophy.
We would like to thank all the staff at the Perry Park Center for their efforts and allowing us to use their facility. Special thanks also to Paraquad, Inc. Independent Living Center and the Reisenbichler Family who donated transportation to the teams from Texas, Tampa, Tucson, and Shepherd. The team transportation could not have happened without our dedicated drivers Chugg and Guan Hollins (Paraquad employees) who stayed in Perryville all weekend to transport the teams around town. Finally, thank you to Richard Tucker for assisting with equipment transportation and some emergency equipment repairs.
Thank you to all of our sponsors and volunteers who helped make the event a success. Our sponsors: the Rotary Club of Perryville, United Access, Paraquad, St. Louis Wheelchair Athletic Association, MC Industrial, Perry County Insurance, Mueller Fencing, Rozier’s, KWA Constructors, Stonie’s Sausage Shop, St. Louis Sportswear, The Bank of Missouri, The Republic-Monitor, Moeckel, Hacker Lawn Service, Pat & Dale Schamburg, and numerous friends and families.
