2013 Demolition Derby Wheelchair Rugby Tournament

The last weekend in January always signifies Demolition Derby time at Lakeshore Foundation. This year’s field was a mix of Division I & Division II teams. The Derby featured Australian Gold Medalist Chris Bond playing with the Texas Stampede. It also featured a rising international star in Leevi Ylonen playing with the Tampa Generals. The Derby also saw the return of a familiar face with the return of Alabama Sports Hall of Famer Bryan Kirkland playing with the Lakeshore Demolition.
The Tampa Generals came out on day one proving they were no number three seed in their pool. Tampa—lead by Leevi—knocked off the Shepard Smash and St Louis Rams winning their pool. The Demolition lead by Kirkland and Brazilian International player Alexandre “Japa” Taniguchi knocked off the St Louis Rams in the opening game on Saturday. In crossover play on Saturday afternoon, Tampa continued their winning ways by knocking off the Demolition. Texas lead by Bond and Emily Shryock, beat St Louis to advance to the championship game against Tampa.
On Sunday the Shepard Smash lead by Rob Deller beat hard hitting Ron Frederick and the Carolina Crash to take fifth place. St Louis lead by the combination of Eric Newby and Chuck Melton was able to get revenge on the Demolition beating them by one point to take third place. In the championship game, Tampa had to play without Leevi who was injured during the Lakeshore game on Saturday. The Generals fought hard but was no match for the Texas Stampede high/low attack. Congratulations to Coach Gumbie and Texas Stampede for winning the Demolition Derby.
I would like to thank the Lakeshore Foundation for all their support, all the volunteers and Mitch Watkins for running another great tournament.
