2012 University of Arizona

Wildcat Clash

Dec. 8 & 9, 2012

The inaugural University of Arizona Wildcat Clash was held in Tucson, AZ on Dec 8 & 9th, 2012. This was the first tournament that the U of A has hosted since the 2010 Mountain Sectionals. The tournament had 6 DII/DIII teams battle for the title. It was a two day event so there was a lot of rugby to play in a short period of time. Two courts were used and games were running simultaneously.

Coming in 6th place were the San Francisco Renegades led by veteran 0.5 Chris Cook and all tournament 2.0 Mike Schacherbauer. The Renegades competed well but were missing three key players from their roster. 5th place went to the Northridge Knights. The Knights, led by ageless wonder Weasel Luxembourger and all tournament 0.5 Mike Deyoung, took out the Renegades in the 5/6 games with a score of 43-31. The Rebuilding Denver Harlequins looked very good on day one of the tournament. They came out of pool play in second place but lost in their crossover. The Quins finished the tournament in 4th place after falling to the Texans in the 3/4 game on Sunday. One other bright spot for Denver was veteran player/coach, Ron Bolseth, who was voted all tournament 1.5.

Taking home the 3rd place trophy, were the Houston Texans. They were missing a few key players from years past but some new players on the squad have picked up the slack. The Texans played very close with both U of A and Sierra Storm over the weekend and their future looks bright. The Texans were led by veteran 1.0 James Dubose and all tournament 3.0 Ryan Gilmer.

The tournament hosts, The U of A Wildcats, went through pool play and the crossover unscathed. The team is currently in their second year of rebuilding and is starting to reach their stride. They have come a long way in the last year and are now a force to be reckoned with in the DII division. The team is led by veteran 2.5 Steven Rosier and low pointers, Josh O’Neill and Brant Daye.

The Championship game on Sunday was a long awaited rematch that pitted the U of A Wildcats against the Sierra Storm. The Wildcats defeated the Storm at their home tournament a little over a month ago in Reno. The Storm, now at full strength and hungry for revenge, ran with a 4 duce lineup that included Pope, Olsen, Caviness and tournament MVP Troye Collins. The game was very tight and at half time, the Storm had a small 2 point lead. U of A, hoping to outlast the older Storm team, kept the pressure on throughout the second half. Although the Storm looked fatigued, they kept their composure and passed out of the press repeatedly. The sure-handed 4 duce lineup was too much for the Cats to contain and they ended up losing the Championship game by 6 points with a score of Sierra Storm 53 and U of A 47. U of A sophomore and all tournament 2.5, Chelsea Falnes, played the entire game on Sunday and although tired, she was happy with the way she and her team played.

Congratulations to Coach Mason and the rest of the Sierra Storm squad for winning the inaugural University of Arizona Wildcat Clash. May the rivalry continue……
