Summer Slam Success
For the third straight year in Jacksonville Florida, the Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program held their Summer Slam “pick-up” Rugby Tournament. The Brooks Bandits players were among the 48 participants who mixed it up over two fun filled days of rugby, barbeques and competition this past August 4th and 5th. This year’s tournament was the largest yet as the Summer Slam and is quickly becoming the premier off-season rugby event.
Players from all over the country traveled to Jacksonville for the weekend, some driving a very long way, while others were picked up at the airport and taken to the host hotel. The rugby started early as the players arrived at the gym each morning to find they had been assigned to one of six teams consisting of eight players each. The format and continually running game clocks allowed everyone plenty of time to play with and against just about everyone.  A special thanks to Dan Caldwell for all his help coordinating the teams and games.
If you did have some off- court time, the Summer Slam launched its first Rugby Mad Skillz Challenge Course.  A comprehensive “obstacle course” style challenge, comprised of 10 stations of rugby skills completed consecutively rewarding the fastest times in each classification.   On his second run through, Rob Deller from Atlanta set a course record of 1minute, 28seconds. Players enthusiastically cheered and jeered their fellow ruggers for bragging rights as well as best in class medals. An overwhelming success, many participants took home diagrams of the course to share with their teams and prepare for future competitions.
The Summer Slam’s Saturday evening barbeque at the host hotel is just the place to relax after a full day of rugby, enjoy some good food, and catch up with old friends and make some new ones. The Summer Slam could not be the success it is without the help of the many volunteers, the referees and especially Alice Krauss and Brooks Rehabilitation’s Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program.
Looking forward to next year’s event,…hope to see you there
