Heartland Sectionals Wheelchair Rugby Tournament

The St. Louis Rugby Rams wheelchair rugby team and the St. Louis Wheelchair Athletic Association (SLWAA) hosted the Heartland Sectionals Wheelchair Rugby Tournament, March 18-20, 2011 at the Southern Illinois University Recreation Center in Carbondale, IL. The St. Louis Rugby Rams were undefeated this tournament and took home the 1st place trophy.

The Rugby Rams were seeded first going into sectionals. They placed 1st, Frazier TNT placed 2nd and Lakeshore placed 3rd. TNT fought hard for their second place finish beating Michigan by just three points and Lakeshore by only one point on Friday. The afternoon Saturday games, St. Louis versus Lakeshore and TNT versus Minnesota, were close & intense games. The final scores were 46 to 43 & 45 to 43, respectively.
On Sunday, TNT battled it with St. Louis to determine 1st place in the heartland section. TNT stayed close to the Rams, even, taking advantage of some of Rams mistakes to come up by 2 points in the first quarter. St. Louis took back the lead and kept it for a final score of 44 to 37. Minnesota fought against Lakeshore to determine 3rd and 4th but could not overcome Lakeshore’s skill & speed. Their final score was 51 to 41.
The all tournament team consisted of Clayton Braun of St. Louis, .5, Nick Fonner of Chicago, 1.0, Mike Schamburg of St. Louis, 1.5, Ernie Chun of TNT, 2.0, Kyle Peterson of Minnesota, 2.5, Scott Severn of Michigan, 3.0, and Justin LeClaire of Chicago, 3.5. Eric Newby of St. Louis received MVP and Jody Mines of Minnesota received the sportsmanship award.
