Once again the 4th annual Brooks Rehabilitation Southern Slam Quad Rugby Tournament in Jacksonville, Florida was a resounding success. Although 10  teams were invited, many other teams asked to be considered for an invitation.  The 10 teams competed across 3 days of smashing good rugby.  Competition was fierce this year with 13 of the 30 games being won by 8 points or less.  We were thrilled to welcome the South Florida Rattlers who in their first season came away with a win at the Slam.  We are also happy to congratulate the Tampa Generals on taking First Place overall in a very exciting game against the Raleigh Sidewinders that until the last 2 minutes, was only separated by a 1 point differential.

The Slam was fortunate again this year to partner with the following Platinum level sponsors; Vesco Metal Craft, who graciously donated a rugby chair frame for auction, Invacare and Airgas, who again this year came through for the Slam and all the athletes by offering the Arc’s and Spark’s welding services all day Saturday for free to all athletes in attendance.  Also, the Slam would not have been possible without the tireless dedication of the hundreds of family members and volunteers who thanklessly offered their time and hard work.  Without them, the Slam simply would not have been possible.

The Bandits showed that their hard work during the off season has lead to significant improvement on the court.  Winning only 3 games in the 2010 season, the Bandits exploded this year winning 9 games and coming within 3 points in 5 other games.  Most importantly, at this year’s Southern Slam, the Bandits fought hard and took 5th place overall.  The Bandits were also honored to have player Cody Kingsland voted to the All Tournament Team in the 2.5 category and Don Bergman was awarded the Sportsmanship award.  Now, it’s on to Regional’s!

Friday and Saturday nights, the teams were treated to a cookout held at the host hotel.  Everyone congregated in the lobby, the athletes,  support staff, families and the volunteers.  It offered a relaxed environment for them to laugh and talk about rugby, play cards, watch the NFL playoff game and, in general, continue to strengthen and grow the camaraderie of the Rugby Community.

The Brooks Adaptive Sports Program is honored to host the Southern Slam Rugby Tournament and the Bandits.  This has been an exciting season and we look forward to seeing what 2012 has in store.  The Bandits are on the rise and it won’t be long before they start surprising teams with their skills, their heart and their desire to win.
