For the past 18 years, quadriplegics have been coming to Tampa in January for two reasons; the weather (a comfortable 70 degrees this year) and the Coloplast International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. This year’s tournament was one of the most competitive yet and featured 8 teams from as far away as Canada.

The tournament opened up with Michigan playing the Tampa Generals, who were at full strength for the 1st time this season. The Generals, led by tournament MVP Mike Whitehead, won 54-45. That game was followed up by two exciting matchups. Magee beat the lower seeded Raleigh Sidewinders by two and the Texas Stampede had their 1st upset of the day beating the Shepherd Smash 47-46 in a thriller. Texas then went out and destroyed Magee 60-37 in what was the most surprising result of the weekend. The remainder of Friday’s games had top seeds taking care of their opponent.

Saturday morning had the top seeds of each pool playing to determine the afternoon crossovers. Team Canada featuring Garret Hickling displayed speed and fundamentals as they beat Tampa in front of the home crowd. Michigan, Texas, and Shepherd all went on to win their morning games. The afternoon crossovers featured Canada breezing past Shepherd, putting them in the Championship game and placing Shepherd in the 3rd/4th placing game. The other crossover had Tampa rebounding from the morning loss and beating Texas 47-40, setting the stage for a rematch against Canada in the final.

Sunday morning began with the steadily improving Brooks Bandits losing to Raleigh in the 7th/8th game and Michigan winning comfortably over Magee in the 5th/6th placing game. Paralympian, Norm Lyduch, led his Texas Stampede past Shepherd to finish 3rd for the weekend. In the Championship game, Canada once again controlled things from the start and beat Tampa to become the 2010 Coloplast International champions. Special thanks to Coloplast, Tampa General Hospital, Invacare Top End, Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay, and all of the other sponsors and volunteers who made this tournament possible.
