St. Louis finds new blood post Murderball

by Sue Tucker & Kerri Morgan

In October 2005, the St. Louis Rugby Rams hosted the 2nd Annual Halloween Havoc in which the Chicago Bears came out the victors over TNT by 1 point. What is possibly more exciting than a new force in the Heartland, is the growth of teams post release of Murderball.

The St. Louis Rugby Rams have been searching for new players for the past 3 years and had been virtually unsuccessful until this season. Three new players emerged for St. Louis following the release of the documentary “Murderball”. Newcomer Derrick Helton (2.0) from central Missouri heard about it after watching MTV and sought out the team captains of the Rugby Rams. Within 1 month of contacting the team he was headed out to a camp in Indianapolis and then to Summer Blast in California. Unfortunately for the Rams, Helton was drawn to sunny (and warm) Arizona by the players from U of A. Helton is missed by the Rams but wherever he plays he will have an impact on the USQRA and beyond in the future.

After the Rams’ annual Halloween Havoc, Helton moved to Arizona and the Rams were fortunate to recruit 2 more new players who had also caught the fever after seeing “Murderball”. Clayton Braun (0.5) and Jason DeSalvo (0.5) had previously not given much thought to playing sports post injury. Braun was injured in a diving accident 2 years ago and DeSalvo was injured in a diving accident 15 years ago.

DeSalvo (far right in white) sets a pick on Brian Muniz of the Chicago Bears.

Braun came to the Halloween Havoc tournament to watch and by the next week was a practicing maniac—he has only been playing for 3 months and he is already having an impact on the floor. DeSalvo saw “Murderball” over the summer and was intrigued, but not enough to seek out the team. Support staff member Jayme Eggum recruited DeSalvo at a community exercise facility in St. Louis in late October and shortly afterward DeSalvo was practicing with the team and traveling to tournaments. The Rams also saw the return of seasoned player Paul Rickman (0.5) who had been absent from rugby for 4 years.

The Rams have been fortunate to see growth within the team this past year. Last season we played with 5-6 players and so far this season we have seen that number grow to 10-11. It has been great to see the growth of other teams as we travel to tournaments this season. Seeing Indy start their team back up with a long line of players on the bench waiting to get in on the action is an awesome sight, as well as seeing other teams around the league bring both new faces and old to the court. We can only hope that other teams around the league are also experiencing what we have here—a renewed interest in quad rugby.

New Faces, Tough Competition, a Repeat Champion Emerges

On January 20-22nd, 2006, over 100 athletes traveled the globe to Tampa, Florida. This journey wasn’t made to enjoy the 80 degree temperatures, but rather to compete in the 14th annual Coloplast International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. This year’s international field consisted of New Zealand, Great Britain, and Canada. The U.S. portion of the field came strong with the defending USQRA champion Texas Stampede, Phoenix Heat, Hoveround (Sarasota) Gunners, Magee (Philadelphia) Eagles, and the tournament host Tampa Generals.

Annual Knock and Roll tournament turns into Demolition derby during Jupiter event

by Mike English

After a weekend of "murder ball" the Lakeshore Demolition rolled away with the winners crown at the sixth annual Knock and Roll Wheelchair Rugby tournament held over the weekend at the West Recreation Center.

The tournament drew six teams including the Alabama-based Demolition, the Denver Harlequins, the Great Lakes Storm from Michigan and three Florida teams — the South Florida Rattlers (who finished third), the Tampa Generals and the second-place Hoveround Gunners from Sarasota.

It was an international field with players from Australia and New Zealand.

"You're looking at a lot of national team players from around the world," said Rattlers coach Marco Dispaltro. "There are three U.S. national players on the Denver team."

There haven't been any Palm Beach County players on the Rattlers squad for three years, said Dispaltro. There are a couple of players on the roster from Broward and Miami-Dade counties but most of them are snowbirds from Canada, like Dispaltro.

"Last year, we had players on the Rattlers from Sweden and Finland," he said. "Our on-going project is to find some local players and, hopefully, in the future to have two teams in the South Florida area."

Quad rugby — or "murder ball" — is not for everybody, Dispaltro warned; there is a lot of contact between the players, but if anyone — male or female — is interested, they can contact the club, through their Web site, www.quadrugby.com.

Although the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department doesn't sponsor the Rattlers, they have hosted the Knock and Roll Tournament since its inception, said Co-Tournament Director Renata Watson.

The tournament drew two less teams this year because there were two other tournaments — on the West Coast and in the North East, she said.

Palm Beach County also hosts the annual Mosquito Open wheelchair tennis tournament at Carlin Park in November, although the 2005 event had to be cancelled because of Hurricane Wilma, Watson said.

The county wants to promote more wheelchair sports programs, Watson added. "We do have trouble in Palm Beach County finding people who are interested in participating in different sports.

"We're hoping to start a wheelchair basketball program but we're looking for people interested in participating."

Interested players can call Watson at (561) 966-7015 for details.

"If the wheelchair athletes want to come up with something else on their own, we will help start it," Watson said.

2006 Knock & Roll Rocks

The 6th Annual Knock and Roll tournament was held the weekend of January 13-15, 2006 in Jupiter, Florida at the West Jupiter Recreational Center. The 6 team field was the strongest yet, and the round robin tournament had the potential to be legendary.

New Team FORCE Members Announced

TEAM ANNOUCEMENT

Birmingham, AL-

The United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA) is pleased to announce that the 2013-2015 Team Force has been named.  All who participated in the tryouts competed at a very high level, giving it everything they had, making the final selections extremely difficult.  Thirty one players from all over the country came to Lakeshore Foundation, home of USA Wheelchair Rugby, for a three day tryout.  With the final selections being made, head coach Dave Ceruti says “It was a great camp, there were battles at every position, but in the end there’s no doubt we picked the twelve players to represent the USQRA and help develop the future of USA rugby.”  The players trying out completed seven different rugby specific skills tests and went head to head in scrimmages and competition. The USA Wheelchair Rugby head coach, James Gumbert, was a part of the selection committee, and said “selection of these athletes represents the future of wheelchair rugby in the United States.  Their tireless dedication and sacrifices will serve them well on their international journey.  We are very excited and eager to get to work with the team.”   The team consists of many athletes that are new  to the Force program, as well as a handful of veterans.  Team Force looks forward to working with all the new and raw talent as they develop a strong foundation and highly competitive team over the next couple of years.  Retired Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Nate Harmon says “I look forward to building a team with people with different backgrounds.  There is no telling what the future holds, but look forward to it.”  An additional veteran player, Eric Ingram states, “I’m very proud to represent the team and build upon myself as a player and continue USA dominance in the world.

The team will have one more training camp in 2013 and tournaments and training camps throughout 2014.  Team Force is a developmental/pipeline program that feeds directly into the USA Wheelchair Rugby program.  For information on tryouts or the program, please contact Heather Campbell at hmcampbell21@gmail.com
